Dr. Sergio Alvarez Mulett was born and raised in Bucaramanga, Colombia. He earned his medical degree from the National University of Colombia in Bogotá. Following graduation, he completed a year of social service providing medical care to underserved communities in eastern Colombia. He later returned to his hometown to practice as a general physician at an academic hospital, gaining firsthand experience in community-based and hospital medicine.
In 2018, Dr. Alvarez Mulett moved to New York City, where he joined the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine as a research associate. During nearly three years in this role, he contributed to multiple translational research initiatives, including studies on the metabolomic and proteomic profiles of COVID-19.
He completed his Internal Medicine residency at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in 2024. Dr. Alvarez Mulett is currently a second-year Infectious Diseases fellow at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. His academic interests include antimicrobial resistance, orthopedic infections, infections in immunocompromised hosts, and bacteriophage therapy.
