I have had the privilege to work in biomedical research at academic institutions, pharmaceutical and biotech companies for more than 20 years. My academic research work has been focused on virology, in particular DNA tumor viruses and their encoded oncogenes that are essential for viral replication and cell transformation. As part of that effort, I have led laboratory, translational and clinical studies to evaluate the pathogenesis and dynamics of viral infections among immune competent and immunocompromised hosts.
In my drug development work, I have been a key contributor in the evaluation, clinical development phases I/II/III, and submission of NDAs/MAAs of different first in class drugs for RNA viruses (HIV and HCV) in the US, Europe, Japan and China. More recently, I have been building, and leading translation science and clinical development organizations conducting programs and their respective regulatory filings (IND to NDA/BLA) for small molecules and biologics, including tissue/cell based therapy for indications across different therapeutic areas in the US, Europe and Japan.
As part of my work in research laboratories, biopharmaceutical and biotech companies, I have also led the development and approval of different in vitro molecular diagnostic assays for laboratory and companion diagnostics in drug development. Both, my academic research and drug/assay development work, have been published in more than 100 articles in peer reviewed high impact journals and have received the recognition of awards from the USA National Institute of Health and private foundations.
