Dr. Siddharth Sridhar is a clinical associate professor at the department of microbiology of The University of Hong Kong. He is a clinical virologist and his research focuses on the impact of emerging viruses on the health of immunocompromised individuals. In 2018, he led the team responsible for the seminal discovery that rat hepatitis E virus, a highly divergent variant within the family Hepeviridae, is capable of infecting humans. This discovery gained international attention, while also impacting domestic policy on pest control and viral hepatitis diagnostics. In 2019, he led a territory-wide clinical and epidemiological investigation on the impact of rat hepatitis E in Hong Kong by analyzing three thousand human and rat samples. Furthermore, he has developed vaccines and diagnostic assays for this novel zoonosis. He is also actively engaged in research and knowledge exchange on the emerging COVID-19 pandemic with several peer-reviewed publications.
