Dr. Valliammai Alaguvel is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of California, Irvine, working with Dr. E. R. Chulie Ulloa. Her research focuses on developing novel therapeutic strategies through synergistic antibiotic combinations to combat antimicrobial resistance in bacterial infections.
Her previous postdoctoral work investigated bacterial stress responses and host–pathogen interactions, including the role of alkyl quinolones under antibiotic stress in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and proximity-based proteomic mapping of antibacterial histones in Escherichia coli.
Dr. Alaguvel earned her Ph.D. in Biotechnology from Alagappa University, India, where she elucidated the molecular mechanisms of natural antibiofilm agents against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, leading to three Indian patents. Before joining UC Irvine, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel, examining protist–bacteria interactions in wastewater ecosystems.
She has authored 20 peer-reviewed publications and two book chapters, with a cumulative impact factor exceeding 85, and her work has appeared in leading journals such as Scientific Reports, mSystems, and Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy. Her honors include the FEMS Young Scientist Award, Jacob Blaustein Postdoctoral Fellowship, and MK Bhan–Young Researcher Fellowship. Her long-term research interests focus on antimicrobial resistance, bacterial biofilms, microbial communication, and stress response mechanisms.
