I am a Peruvian medical doctor specializing in Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine. In July 2012, the Peruvian HIV National Program appointed me to update the national HIV guidelines and coordinate and monitor health policies related to HIV in Peru. Additionally, I was part of the team of consultants responsible for drafting the Peruvian Guidelines for treating TB/HIV coinfection.
I served as a clinical investigator at Asociación Civil Impacta Salud y Educación (IMPACT) for four years, where I participated in clinical trials and observational studies associated with HIV research networks, including ACTG, HVTN, INSIGHT, and MTN. I was the Investigator of Record for several ACTG studies, such as “Reducing Early Mortality and Early Morbidity by Empiric Tuberculosis Treatment Regimens (REMEMBER),” “Management Using the Latest Technologies in Resource-Limited Settings to Optimize Combination Therapy After Viral Failure (MULTI-OCTAVE),” and “Rifampin-Based vs. Rifabutin-Based TB Treatment in HIV.”
Furthermore, I was the Investigator of Record for the NIH-funded R01 project titled “HIV Testing and Treatment to Prevent Onward HIV Transmission among High-Risk MSM” at the Via Libre site. In the antimicrobial stewardship field, I conducted multicenter observational studies in Antimicrobial Stewardship, such as the “Project for the Implementation and Evaluation of Antimicrobial Stewardship at the Institutional Level in Adult Intensive Care Units of Latin America” (PROA-LATAM) in collaboration with the University of Michigan, as well as the “Point Prevalence Survey on the Use of Antibiotics in Hospitals” in partnership with the Pan-American Health Organization and the Ministry of Health of Peru.
In addition to my research work, I am a clinical instructor for The Gorgas Course in Clinical Tropical Medicine and a professor at Universidad Peruana Unión. I am also a member of the Antimicrobial Stewardship and infections Prevention and Control Programs at Hospital Cayetano Heredia; they are my focus of jobs and research.
