Dr. Thomas F. Patterson received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University, in Waco, Texas and his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, Texas. He completed his internship and residency at Vanderbilt University Medical School and at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Yale University School of Medicine where he also served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine.
Dr. Patterson currently is Marvin Forland, MD, MACP, Endowed Distinguished Chair in Medicine
Professor of Medicine and Director, San Antonio Center for Medical Mycology at University of Texas Health San Antonio, Texas where he previously served as Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases. His clinical and research interests focus on the diagnosis and treatment of fungal diseases, particularly in immunocompromised hosts. He has been involved in developing new antifungal drugs and in clinical trials of antifungal compounds.
During the COVID-19 pandemic Dr. Patterson led the UT Health San Antonio Division of Infectious Diseases efforts to develop safe and effective therapies against COVID-19. He and his team were a leading enrolling site for those NIH supported trials. He was awarded the 2021 UTHSA Presidential Distinguished Research Scholar award. He is site contact principal investigator for the NIH RECOVER UT Health San Antonio hub. He has published and lectured extensively with over 400 peer reviewed publications, chapters, books and reviews. He is a Past-President of the Texas Infectious Disease Society and the International Immunocompromised Host Society, a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (FIDSA), a Master of the American College of Physicians (MACP) and an elected member of the Association of American Physicians (AAP).
