Post-doctoral research
Amsterdam University Medical Center
Michiel Schinkel, MD, PhD, Msc, is a physician–researcher and internal medicine resident in the Netherlands, currently rotating at the St. Antonius Hospital. Alongside his residency, he conducts post-doctoral research at Amsterdam UMC that bridges clinical care with data science, applying advanced analytics and machine learning to pressing problems in infectious diseases.
Dr. Schinkel holds a Master’s degree in Data Science from the University of Colorado Boulder. His research centers on optimizing blood culture utilization to reduce contamination rates and avoid unnecessary downstream testing and treatment. He has developed AI-based tools to guide blood culture ordering, aiming to reduce contamination rates and improve the overall effectiveness of this critical diagnostic test. Currently, he and his team are conducting an RCT to demonstrate its potential to guide clinical decision-making and improve patient safety. Building on this work, he has examined the negative consequences of blood culture contamination, including unnecessary antimicrobial exposure, diagnostic testing, and prolonged hospital stays.
