She attended medical school at the University of Alabama School of Medicine (Birmingham) and completed both her Internal Medicine residency and Infectious Diseases fellowship at Emory. She is an active member of both SHEA and IDSA. She is the Emory Department of Medicine's Associate Vice Chair of RYSE. She is the Immediate Past President of the American Federation for Medical Researchers.
