Senior Staff Specialist Paediatric Surgeon, Children's Health Queensland
Professor of Paediatric Surgery, University of Queensland, Australia
South Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
Craig McBride trained in Paediatric Surgery in Aotearoa/New Zealand and Australia, and is a citizen of both countries. He has Australasian and American Fellowships in Paediatric Surgery, and a PhD in children's burns from the University of Queensland.
Although he has lived in Australia since 2006, he still supports the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team - as does the rest of his family. He commenced his surgical training in Aotearoa, and moved to Melbourne Australia in 2006 with his wife and 6-week old son, and then to Brisbane Queensland in 2008 to take up his first appointment as a Paediatric Surgeon at what is now the largest Children's Hospital in Australia. In addition to his Professorial appointment at the University of Queensland, Craig is an academic titleholder at both Griffith and Bond Universities in Queensland, and at Queen Mary University of London.
Among Professor McBride's research interests are vascular access techniques in children, aspects of vessel preservation, and the prevention and treatment of extravasation injuries. He is part of research groups with multiple trials and publications in these fields. As a Neonatal Surgeon his operations sometimes create the necessity for long-term central vascular access. As a General Paediatric Surgeon he is often called on to provide vascular access for children. As a Paediatric Burns Surgeon, he sees the aftermath of improper or inappropriate line use resulting in extravasation injuries. As the Chair of the Children's Health Queensland Morbidity and Mortality Committee and the previous Medical Lead of Clinical Governance and Improvement, he has had to deal with families whose child has suffered a Healthcare Associated Complication from their vascular access.
