Dr. Willig completed his Infectious Diseases training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), trained in Internal Medicine at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, VA and completed his medical school education in at the Instituto Tecnologico de Santo Domingo (INTEC) in the Dominican Republic. During a 20 year stint at UAB he worked in various Informatics and medical education roles. Experience in Informatics led to board certification in Clinical Informatics and immersion into the world of HIV outcomes research. Lessons learned in Informatics and HIV research later found expression in various medical education roles at UAB (Internal Medicine co-Clerkship Director, Assistant Dean of Clinical Education) and most recently at UT Southwestern (Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education) in designing ways to capture learner data in clinical care environments to model and detect lagging skill development and collaboratively build curriculum to address specific issues. Dr. Willig is fond of noting that "none of us is as smart as all of us," that a "curriculum is a dialogue, not a monologue." He strives to be a lifelong learner every day.
