Ajmeet Pama-Ghuman is a second-year medical student at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF SOM), where she is part of the San Joaquin Valley Program in Medical Education (SJV PRIME) track. Her early exposure to language barriers and gaps in access to healthcare in her hometown, a rural agricultural town in the San Joaquin Valley, inspired a deep commitment to improving health equity for medically underserved communities.
While a Smittcamp Family Honors College President’s Scholar at Fresno State, she served as a community health worker during the COVID-19 pandemic and conducted research on tunneling nanotubes involved in viral pathogenesis under Dr. Karine Gousset, sparking her interest in infectious disease research.
At UCSF, she works under Dr. Ajit Limaye as a research assistant in the Transplant & Immunocompromised Host Infectious Diseases Program, contributing to a quality improvement initiative on CMV management in solid organ transplant patients. Her related work on CMV lateral flow assays earned her the Notable Contribution to Research Award through the UCSF ASPIRE Summer Fellowship.
Beyond research, Ajmeet serves as Co-Director of Primetime, leading curriculum development, logistics, and mentorship for pre-medical students from underserved backgrounds. She also coordinates the UCSF Infectious Diseases Interest Group and helped redesign the medical student ID elective to enhance student engagement.
As she continues through her training, Ajmeet plans to integrate clinical infectious disease with research and health policy to address rural health disparities, with a long-term vision rooted in service to the San Joaquin Valley.
