Farrell Tobolowsky is a medical epidemiologist and adult infectious diseases physician who is currently the Medical Director of the Communicable Disease Program at the San Francisco Department of Public Health. In her current position, she leads the teams who perform investigations and outbreak response on locally reportable communicable diseases (other than HIV, tuberculosis, and sexually transmitted infections) and continues to remain clinically active at a local community hospital. Prior to this role, she worked at CDC for 5+ years as a medical epidemiologist and subject matter expert in diphtheria, poliovirus, and enteric infections. During her time at CDC, Farrell led outbreak investigations of poliovirus, botulism, campylobacter-associated Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Salmonella, E. Coli, and COVID-19, supported surveillance strengthening for suspect diphtheria cases, foodborne vehicles responsible for outbreaks, global antimicrobial resistance, and poliovirus in several countries, and provided clinical consultations for Mpox, poliovirus, and vaccine safety. She also co-led the development of an immunization program to improve coverage in consequential geographies, tracked the spread of the mobile colistin resistance (mcr) gene in enteric pathogens in the United States, and evaluated the healthcare costs of multidrug resistant Salmonella and Shigella infections. Farrell completed her Infectious Diseases fellowship at the University of Colorado and Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Texas. She completed medical school at the University of North Texas (2014) and received her Master of Science in Global Medicine and Bachelor of Arts in Health and Humanity from the University of Southern California (2010, 2009).
