Dr Usman Nakakana is a pediatrician, Pediatric Infectious Diseases specialist, and an expert in vaccine clinical development, working at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as a senior program officer for vaccine development and impact in AMR, Pneumonia, and pandemic preparedness. Previously he was at the GSK Vaccines Institute for Global Health, where he led a team of clinical development physicians engaged in developing AMR-targeted vaccines. Usman was also an investigator at the Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, evaluating the potential use of intrapartum Azithromycin for the prevention of maternal and neonatal sepsis, other infections and death. He has served in previous roles as a technical expert for UNICEF for vaccination campaigns in Nigeria and study physician in research studies there as well. A member of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society(PIDS), Usman has authored a book and several peer-reviewed articles regarding vaccine preventable diseases and AMR. Usman is medically qualified following medical school and pediatric specialization in Nigeria and has a master's degree in Vaccinology and pharmaceutical clinical development from the University of Siena. He also holds a postgraduate certificate from the Boston University College of Medicine.
