Dr Sandeep Rao Kordcal is a Fellow in Infectious Diseases at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, India’s premier institution for medical education and research. He graduated as the top-ranked medical student from Father Muller Medical College, Mangalore.
His clinical and research interests focus on tuberculosis, healthcare-associated infections and cytomegalovirus. As a medical student, his first research project on the diagnosis of extrapulmonary tuberculosis was awarded a grant by the Indian Council of Medical Research. His subsequent research on the incidence of tuberculosis among household contacts of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis earned the AIIMS Research Day Award. He has also received funding from the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, and the European Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases to present his work internationally.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he founded a digital platform and an Instagram initiative ‘Crelevate’ that documented the experiences of frontline healthcare workers during India’s first and second waves. With a keen interest in innovative approaches to medical education, he founded the Medicine Quiz Club at his institution and introduced weekly quizzes to foster engaging and enjoyable learning.
When off duty, he enjoys practicing Muay Thai and volunteering at a local meditation centre. He values being part of spiritual communities and loves spending time in nature.
