Dr. Merlin Moni is a Clinical Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi. She received her medical degree from Government Medical College, Kottayam, and subsequently completed her MD in Internal Medicine at TD Medical College, Alappuzha, Kerala. She later pursued a Fellowship in Clinical Infectious Diseases from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Amrita University).
As an Infectious Diseases (ID) physician, Dr. Moni’s clinical responsibilities primarily include the management of complex infections such as difficult-to-treat bacterial infections, post-operative and post-transplant infections, and cases of pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO). She plays a pivotal role in promoting rational antimicrobial use and co-leads the institutional Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP). She has contributed significantly to the development of hospital antibiotic dosage protocols and serves as a clinical lead for both the Infection Control Team and the Patient Safety Team, actively engaging in various quality improvement initiatives.
Dr. Moni’s primary research interest lies in antimicrobial resistance (AMR). She is a key member of the hospital’s clinical research team managing the Sepsis Registry a central repository of integrated clinical data related to sepsis care. She has led a pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) study of colistin in the Indian population and has been actively involved in capacity-building activities for prescribers as part of the State AMR Containment Program.
In addition, Dr. Moni has contributed to multiple research projects focusing on COVID-19 and post-COVID syndromes, further highlighting her commitment to addressing evolving infectious disease challenges.
