Dr. Katharine Bar is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the director of the Virus Reservoirs Core of the Penn Center for AIDS Research. As a translational physician-scientist, her molecular virology laboratory studies the basic mechanisms of virus transmission, pathogenesis and persistence of HIV-1 within novel nonhuman primate (NHP) models and curated clinical cohorts. Her current research program aims to delineate the mechanisms of HIV persistence to inform therapy and cure strategies. Through her leadership roles in HIV clinical trials groups (eg, the ACTG and HVTN). Dr. Bar works to translate basic discovery into new strategies for HIV prevention, therapy and cure.
