After studying in Kiel (Germany), Oviedo (Spain), and Polokwane (South Africa), Benjamin began his residency in internal medicine in Rostock in 2006 and he completed it in Jena in 2013. This was followed by further training as an infectious disease specialist in 2015. Since 2011, he is working in the outpatient and inpatient care of patients with HIV infection and AIDS at the Institute for Infectious Diseases and Hospital Hygiene at Jena University Hospital - Germany.
In his teaching and research he is focusing on tropical medicine and, in addition to various aspects of HIV medicine, he is doing research on schistosomiasis in pregnant patients. A special focus of his research is the implementation of vaccination strategies for the vulnerable patient group of immunocompromised patients.
