Colonel Ana Elizabeth Markelz, MD, FACP, FIDSA currently serves as Chair of the Department of Medicine at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), Consultant in Infectious Diseases to the Army Surgeon General, and Associate Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). She also serves as the Medical Director for Personnel Reintegration and Post Isolation Support Activities at BAMC, where she oversees the complex reintegration of U.S. citizens and service members repatriated from captivity or wrongful detention abroad.
Prior to assuming her current roles, COL Markelz served as the Deputy Chair of Medicine for Administration and Operations and as Chair of the Infectious Disease Division at BAMC. She was the Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Control (IPaC) at BAMC from 2017 to 2022, where she led high-impact investigations and interventions for outbreaks involving Legionella, Mumps, multidrug-resistant organisms, Clostridioides difficile, and served as a key leader during BAMC’s COVID-19 response. As part of the South Texas Regional Advisory Council (STRAC) Infectious Disease team, she contributed to regional pandemic planning and response. Her operational experience includes outbreak investigations in Afghanistan, providing outbreak management instruction in Madagascar and Serbia, and serving as Brigade Surgeon for the 48th Chemical Brigade, where she directed medical planning for the U.S Army response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
COL Markelz earned her medical degree from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and completed her Internal Medicine residency and Infectious Disease fellowship at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC). She is board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease.
An accomplished educator, clinician, and leader, she has received numerous honors including the 2024 Military Health System Award for the Advancement of Military Physicians and the 2022 AMSUS Outstanding Physician Award. She has published over 25 peer-reviewed manuscripts, serves as core faculty for the SAUSHEC Internal Medicine Residency and Infectious Disease Fellowship, and is an active investigator in multiple multicenter research trials. COL Markelz holds the AMEDD 9A Proficiency Designator, is a Fellow of both the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Diseases Society of America and is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit.
