Angela Hewlett MD, MS, is Professor of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and is the George W. Orr and Linda Orr Chair in Health Security. Dr. Hewlett serves as Medical Director of the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit and Associate Medical Director of the National Quarantine Unit, where she actively participated in the care of several patients with Ebola virus disease as well as some of the first patients in the United States with COVID-19. She has provided subject matter expertise through the National Emerging Special Pathogens Training and Education Center (NETEC) and multiple other national and international biopreparedness advisory groups and venues. She is the Chair of the IDSA Outbreak and Pandemic Preparedness and Response Education Panel.
Dr. Hewlett is an active clinician, and served as Director of the Orthopedic Infectious Diseases team at UNMC from 2009-2025. She is a past-President of the Musculoskeletal Infection Society (MSIS) and was an invited delegate at the International Consensus Meeting (ICM) on Periprosthetic Joint Infection. She is the Director of the UNMC School of Medicine Enhanced Medical Education Track (EMET) in Biopreparedness and Biocontainment and also coordinates biocontainment training for UNMC ID Fellows. Her research interests include emerging infectious diseases, biopreparedness and complicated bone and joint infections. She has authored more than 130 publications and book chapters. Her textbook ‘Planning for Bioemergencies: A Guide for Healthcare Facilities’ was released in 2018.
Dr. Hewlett earned a BA in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin, and an MD from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), where she also completed a residency in Internal Medicine. She served as Chief Resident, then completed a 2 year Infectious Diseases fellowship followed by a 1 year NIH-funded research fellowship with a focus in Hospital Epidemiology. She also holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Sciences-Clinical Investigation from the University of Texas Medical Branch.
