Emily Abdoler, MD, MAEd is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School and a staff physician at the Ann Arbor VA Health System. She works clinically in adult Infectious Diseases, is co-director of the Infectious Diseases & Microbiology course for medical students, assistant director of the preclerkship medical school curriculum, co-chair of the Academy of Medical Educators, and associate program director for the Infectious Diseases fellowship. For IDSA, she currently serves as Vice-Chair of the IDWeek Working Group for the Medical Education Community of Practice and on the Leadership Institute Subcommittee. Her research focuses on metacognition in medical education - including clinical reasoning and deliberate practice - and she is actively involved in curriculum development, educational program evaluation, and projects related to assessment and medical education careers for subspecialists. In 2022, she was proud to have been award the M. Brownell Anderson Award for early-career medical educators for the AAMC's Central Group on Educational Affairs, and this year is a Scholar in Diagnostic Excellence through the National Academy of Medicine.
She earned her medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School. Prior to medical school, she was a pre-doctoral fellow in Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Adult Infectious Diseases at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). While at UCSF, she also completed an advanced fellowship in Health Professions Education Evaluation and Research at the San Francisco VA Health Center and received her Masters in Education with a Health Professions emphasis through the University of California, Berkeley.
