Sara Hurtado Bares is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Bares earned her medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City and completed her Internal Medicine residency, chief residency and Infectious Diseases fellowship at the University of Chicago. Since joining University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2013, Dr. Bares has been active in patient care, clinical research, and medical education.Her clinical work focuses on improving the health of people with HIV, with a special interest in multidisciplinary care and Spanish-speaking populations—she co-founded a Spanish-language HIV clinic that operates twice monthly. Her research, informed by her clinical practice, spans HIV comorbidities, aging, and women’s health, and includes both federally funded and industry-sponsored studies.A dedicated educator, Dr. Bares has received multiple teaching awards, including the Golden Apple for best pre-clinical educator. She is passionate about mentoring trainees and actively contributes to medical education at all levels. Deeply committed to community service, she mentors at the student-run RESPECT clinic, serves on the Board of Directors for OneWorld Health Center, and co-founded the Nebraska chapter of the National Hispanic Medical Association.
