John J. Hanna, MD is Associate Chief Medical Information Officer for Digital Health and Research Analytics at ECU Health and Affiliate Faculty at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. Board certified in internal medicine, infectious diseases, and clinical informatics, Dr. Hanna helps lead health system-wide efforts to integrate technology thoughtfully into clinical care. His work focuses on advancing AI governance, predictive analytics infrastructure, and equitable access to telehealth across eastern North Carolina. He serves as Co-Chair of ECU Health’s Digital Health Subcommittee and maintains an active infectious diseases practice.
In his operational role, Dr. Hanna influences digital health and clinical AI strategies that enhance care quality, expand access, and align digital innovation with ECU Health’s mission. He helped develop scalable systems to monitor clinical predictive models, led the deployment of AI-enabled care pathways—such as sepsis management—within the electronic health record, and supports efforts to grow ECU Health’s telehealth footprint across rural eastern North Carolina, bridging gaps in specialty care and improving quality through technology-enabled models.
Dr. Hanna’s research lies at the intersection of real-world data, clinical informatics, and AI implementation. His recent publications include models predicting antimicrobial resistance using socioeconomic deprivation indices, as well as a recently featured peer-reviewed study assessing racial and ethnic bias in large language models used for health-related tasks. Through this work, he aims to support the responsible development and deployment of AI tools while promoting data-driven strategies to improve outcomes and reduce disparities in care.
