Professor of Pediatrics
University of Tennessee Health Science Center
Memphis, TN, United States
I have been a clinician and clinical researcher at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in the Department of Pediatrics for over 23 years. The focus of my clinical work and research has been on infectious diseases and their mimics in the normal host including but not limited to osteoarticular infections, pneumonia and other respiratory tract infections, and antimicrobial stewardship, and histoplasmosis. I was the site Principal Investigator for the Etiology of Pneumonia in the Community (EPIC) study, sponsored by the CDC. This study enrolled over 2500 children,1000 of whom were enrolled in Memphis, and has enhanced our understanding of pneumonia in the post-conjugate vaccine era and resulted in two New England Journal Medicine publications. I have also published research on osteoarticular infections in children and am a member of the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA)/Pediatric Infectious Disease Society committee that has recently published North American guidelines for the diagnosis and management of acute hematogenous osteomyelitis and acute bacterial arthritis in children. I am the Principal Investigator for the Family Resilience Initiative Research Program. The Family Resilience Initiative (FRI) is a program to screen young children for adverse childhood experiences and social determinants of health in our hospital based, primary care, pediatric clinic and address issues by connecting families to needed services including psychology. The research study is designed to assess the effect of the program on medical and behavioural outcomes. There is also a biorepository of DNA from blood and saliva from mother-infant pairs to examine the epigenetic effects of ACES, social determinants of health and the mitigating effects of FRI. I am currently the Chair of the IDSA committee to update the guidelines on the managment of histoplasmosis.
