Robert W. Pinner, MD, retired from CDC in May 2025, after 37 years. His work over the years has involved several infectious diseases, particularly in surveillance. Recently he has focused on application of public health informatics to infectious disease surveillance. Dr. Pinner joined CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service in 1988 in the Meningitis and Special Pathogens Branch. He played a key role in the development and implementation of CDC’s plan to address emerging infections, and for several years after its inception he led the Emerging Infections Programs (EIP). He has had a longtime interest and engagement in public health informatics. Dr. Pinner has published scientific articles on trends in infectious disease mortality and the epidemiology of several bacterial and fungal diseases, including meningococcal disease, listeriosis, and cryptococcosis. He received a BA from Yale University in 1972 and an MD from the Emory University School of Medicine in 1981. He is board certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases.
