Associate Physician
VA San Diego / UC San Diego
San Diego, CA, United States
Dr. Sean H.P. Jung (also known as Hansang Park) is an infectious diseases physician in the Division of Infectious Diseases & Global Public Health at UC San Diego and the Infectious Diseases section at VA San Diego, where he focuses on clinical infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance research, diagnostic innovation/stewardship, and the prevention of healthcare-associated infections.
After earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology/Biotechnology from Yonsei University in Seoul, Dr. Jung completed his MD at the Catholic University of Korea. He subsequently undertook a transitional internship at Samsung Medical Center in Seoul and worked clinically in primary care settings before relocating to the U.S.
In the U.S., Dr. Jung trained as an internal medicine resident through the NYMC Metropolitan Program in New York, during which he earned a Master of Public Health from UC Berkeley, with a concentration in epidemiology and biostatistics. He then joined UCSD for an infectious disease fellowship in the research track and was appointed Chief Infectious Diseases Fellow in 2023, from which he graduated in 2025.
Dr. Jung’s research interests center on novel strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance, including drug repurposing, host immune augmentation, diagnostic stewardship, and innovative infection prevention approaches. He is particularly motivated by his prior experiences during the MERS and COVID-19 epidemics, which reinforced his commitment to confronting emerging pathogens and antimicrobial-resistant threats.
Throughout his training, Dr. Jung has been recognized for excellence in practice-based learning and quality improvement. He has contributed to peer-reviewed publications on topics including COVID-19 clinical outcomes, antibiotic repurposing, antimicrobial susceptibility testing in more physiologic settings, and the clinical utility of next-generation universal sequencing tests. He was awarded the UCSD Department of Medicine grant for his work in hospital-onset bacteremia.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Dr. Jung was an avid hiker and swimmer, enjoyed following Major League Baseball and NFL games, and traveled with his wife to explore national parks, wineries, and new culinary destinations, which he is no longer able to do because of their sassy toddler, Sage.
