Dr. Laura Hammitt is a Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health where she is the Director of Infectious Disease Prevention Programs at the Center for Indigenous Health. Prior to joining the faculty at Hopkins, Dr. Hammitt served in the US Public Health Service as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer at the Arctic Investigations Program in Alaska, completed fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at the Children’s Hospital in Colorado, and worked for several years as a pediatrician and epidemiologist in rural Kenya. She joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins in 2011 and is based out of southwest Colorado near the Navajo Nation. Her research focuses on infectious disease epidemiology and the evaluation of interventions to reduce the burden of disease in underserved communities. Her particular interests are respiratory infections (pneumonia, RSV), pneumococcal disease, Strep A infection, Haemophilus influenzae and Staphylococcus aureus. Embedded in her work is a commitment to community-driven research and capacity building.
